BEIRUT: U.S. Ambassador David Hale announced Friday America’s contribution of $10 million to the U.N. Children’s Education Fund in Lebanon to enroll vulnerable school-aged children in public schools’ first shift, a statement by the embassy said.
This assistance is part of America’s ongoing commitment to ensure all school-aged children in Lebanon have access to a high-quality education, including those affected by the Syria crisis, it said.
The donation will be made to help UNICEF’s Sustainable Learning Opportunities Program, an initiative that is assisting the Education Ministry in enrolling 24,000 high-risk children for the 2015-16 school year.
The project will be implemented countrywide and target students in kindergarten to Grade 9.
“This assistance is part of a larger commitment from international donors who are responding to Lebanon’s appeal for additional support to vulnerable communities affected by the Syria crisis.
Beyond today’s announcement, America has provided more than $889 million since 2012 to support Lebanese host communities and refugees fleeing violence in Syria.”
