Ambassador Dr. Hicham S. Hamdan, an American citizen of Lebanese descent, addresses President Donald J. Trump in a firm and heartfelt response to recent remarks about Lebanon—defending its legacy and calling for renewed U.S. support rooted in dignity, partnership, and peace.
Your Excellency,
I am an American citizen of Lebanese descent, proud of my roots and my ancestors' legacy.
I wish to express my strong protest against the recent statement made by your Ambassador to Türkiye and representative in the Middle East, Mr. Tom Barrack, in which he described Lebanon as a “failing state.” Such a characterization is both unfair and inappropriate.
Lebanon has long served as a bridge between the United States and the Arab East—sharing your democratic values, your culture of freedom, and your principles of human dignity. It is not Lebanon that has failed, but rather the international community, which allowed the “Pearl of the East” to be transformed into a field of destructive wars that shattered its historic model of coexistence and its steadfast commitment to freedom and human rights.
A nation that has given the world great thinkers such as Gibran Khalil Gibran, Charles Malik, and many others who inspired humanity cannot be called a failed state.
It is deeply regrettable that such words come from a representative of a country that stands as a symbol of peace and enjoys the love and respect of the Lebanese people, who still look to you with hope that you will help free their homeland from the foreign forces that have destroyed its unity and national fabric.
With the highest respect and sincere appreciation,
Ambassador Dr. Hicham S. Hamdan
