The Tunisian General Labour Union (UGTT) today has rejected the Tunisian government’s decision to cancel Saturday as a day off for some public sector employees and called on the government to review its decision.
In a statement, the union described the decision by the Ministry of Public Service and Governance as “unilateral and ill-advised” and “an assault on the public employees’ rights”.
It called on the government to review its decision and open serious and responsible dialogue to find radical solutions that take into account the public interest as well as the public employees’ needs.
The Tunisian Minister of Public Service and Governance, Abid Briki, announced the decision last week giving staff only one day off a week.
Not all government institutions are covered by the new law.
