Hamas said yesterday that it rejects any amendments to the local elections’ law, stressing the need to respect the law according to which elections are to take place.
Hamas’ spokesperson Sami Abu Zuhri called on the Palestinian government to stop the practices it used to manipulate electoral laws and tailor them to suit Fatah’s aspirations.
The movement said that such manipulation of elections and laws causes the democratic process to lose its credibility and meaning.
Palestinian elections were due to be held in early October however they were stopped after a court order stated that could only take place in the occupied West Bank and not in the Gaza Strip. Critics have said that the ruling came following pressure from the ruling Palestinian Authority and Fatah as they feared they would lose their hold on power.
