Beirut - Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri has declared the latest U.S. ceasefire initiative for Lebanon “dead,” revealing that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu “rejected the Lebanese roadmap” agreed upon with U.S. envoy Amos Hochstein.
In remarks to Asharq Al-Awsat, Berri stated that efforts to resolve the ongoing conflict have been postponed until after the U.S. presidential elections next Tuesday.
Berri declined to speculate on how the crisis might unfold following the American presidential election results, asserting that “the only certainty” is that diplomatic efforts have been delayed until after the vote. He warned that the situation in Lebanon remains "at the mercy of developments on the ground" and voiced concern that Lebanon could become “a second Gaza.”
Berri also noted that he has not been in contact with Hochstein after the latter's visit to Israel yesterday. Hochstein’s silence, Berri suggested, has left Lebanon in the dark about next steps, though Lebanon remains committed to its core stance, specifically adherence to United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701, issued in 2006.
