The Kingdom’s Athletics Championship for Best Youth and Junior Performances kicks off today, Thursday, May 14, and will run until May 16. The event is held in parallel with the Athletics Grand Prix, featuring wide participation from the most promising rising Saudi talents in track and field competitions.

The “Best Performances Championship” marks the conclusion of the domestic athletics season. Its concept is based on selecting athletes according to their top recorded results and performance levels throughout the season, which contributes to elevating the technical competitiveness among participants and refining the skills of emerging national talents across various events.

The Saudi Arabian Athletics Federation dedicates this championship to the Under‑20 and Under‑18 categories, stemming from its belief in the importance of investing in younger age groups and providing them with opportunities for direct exposure to elite international athletes competing in the Grand Prix. This approach aims to enhance their readiness and experience ahead of upcoming continental and international competitions.

The timing of the championship is particularly significant for the Saudi U‑20 national team, which is preparing to compete in the Asian Youth Championships at the end of May in Hong Kong, with hopes of securing continental medals and achieving additional qualifying marks for the World Athletics U‑20 Championships scheduled to take place in Eugene this August.

Five Saudi athletes have already secured qualification for the World U‑20 Championships, while the Saudi Arabian Athletics Federation hopes to increase the number of qualifiers in the coming period — a testament to the continuous progress Saudi athletics is witnessing across youth categories.
